The launch of Nokia’s Lumia 800 in Finland proved to be a perfect opportunity to broaden the scope of Veikkaus’ mobile gaming strategy. The new Windows Phone application is the first step forward in this endeavour. The earlier smartphone applications have only enabled viewing the content of veikkaus.fi, but it has not been possible to actually play the games, partly because of certain limitations that concern gaming companies.

In addition to having a extensive experience working with Veikkaus’ digital services we also had prior knowledge of the Windows Phone metro design language, but gaming applications were scarce so we didn’t have benchmarks as a starting point. Since the launch date was fixed to match the release of Lumia Veikkaus decided to focus on the essential games (Lotto, Keno, Viking Lotto, Football Pools, Multibet, Fixed Odds Betting, and result Odds Betting).

We wanted to move from wireframes to prototyping as fast as possible so visual design of the app and actual prototyping were done simultaneously. This helped us to finetune the user experience from the get-go. Microsoft provided additional support for both the UI/UX and the technical functionality in the form of design and quality reviews.

The application was launched as Lumia 800 hit the stores. It was extremely well received and gained praise for it’s straightforward and simple user experience.

The app is being developed constantly on the basis of the feedback from users. Future versions will introduce new and exciting features and something that no gaming company in the world has come up with yet.
