Before taking on the task of redesigning the Sports Tracker app for iPhone we had been working with the design and technical implementation of sports-tracker.com. So we were quite familiar with the concept of Sports Tracker on a larger scale. The visual identity of Sports Tracker had been evolving through the years and the color scheme was a good starting point for the design process. We wanted to be as respectful as possible to the iOS Human Guidelines, while still maintaining the identity and style of the app.
Exploring of different styles and the overall information design were done with the most essential section of the app – the tracking views. The work done with this these views served as a cornerstone for the entire design.
Challenges of advanced tracking
Sports Tracker has always been about more than just simple tracking of route and time. The biggest challenge of the app was to build something that would work with novice trackers as well as the hardcore fitness enthusiasts supporting the varying needs of tracking several different activities.
Using multiple revisions of a set of “flat pages” we were able to efficiently group and sort the information based on it’s relevance starting from the very basic information of time and route all the way to dynamic graphs of speed and elevation.
Later on a “Bright day mode” for workout tracking was added. This was to make the screen as readable as possible while tracking on sunny days
NO NEED TO BE A LONE TRACKER
Sports Tracking Technologies wanted to bring a strong social aspect to the app – something that the competition didn’t have at the time. So searching and adding friends, commenting and sharing on workouts were a given.
A completely new feature was the Explore section. This enabled the user to view workouts, routes and photos from around the globe.
ON ROUTE
After rigorous revising and testing the app underwent an inpendent usability analysis scoring high marks. Sports Tracker was released on the App store at the end of may 2011.
The application was well received and complimented on it’s visual look’n’feel as well as the wide range of features while maintaining usability.

“Let me just say, as a fitness app junkie, the number of features they’ve included in this app without making it feel cumbersome or overwhelming is beyond impressive.”
